PROJECT: TROOP HOWELL BRIDGE
The Problem: 7,296 Holes on the Rochester, NY Troop Howell Bridge needed to be either reamed from 13/16" or drilled to 1-1/16". The process was complicated as there were three plates of structural steel totaling 3-1/16" thick. Further complicating the process was the fact the concrete placement resulted in misalignment of the steel plates.

The Solution: A normal bridge reaming scenario was not feasible. Hougen and their field representative, Mr. Jack Skelly, furnished the Hougen HMD505 and HMD150 Electro-Magnetic Drills. The drilling was accomplished with the Hougen 1-1/16" - 3" Doc Stock Ground Rotobroach. Special adapters were also required.
The majority of the work was performed during the night shift. Half of the holes were drilled from below with the Magnetic Dills and Bits pointed to the sky. |
