CHRISTIAN'S FIRE SAFETY FYI - #4
OSHA Inspections
Is your company prepared for an OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) Inspection pertaining to your Portable Fire Extinguishers?
While conducting an inspection, they will look at the following:
- That each workplace building has a full complement of proper type of fire extinguisher for fire hazards that may present themselves.
- Employees expected or anticipated to use fire extinguishers must be instructed on the hazards of fighting a fire, how to properly operate the fire extinguisher available, and what procedures to follow in alerting others of the fire emergency.
- Only approved fire extinguishers are permitted to be used in workplaces, and they must be kept in good operating condition. Proper maintenance and inspection of this equipment is required by each employer.
- Where the employer wishes to evacuate employees. Instead of having employees fight small fires, there must be written emergency plans and employee training for proper evacuation.
The OSHA logo on the side is a link to the OSHA website. Their site is very informative and recommended for review. |

CHRISTIAN'S FIRE SAFETY FYI - #3
Automotive Fire Protection is an Emerging Concern.
Did you know:
- Per capita, the US has one of the highest fire death rates in the industrialized world. Fires involving highway vehicles (Cars, Trucks, Motorcycles, Busses and Trailers) resulted in 545 deaths and 2,050 injuries in 1998.
- The 1,000 vehicle fires on office properties in 1999 caused $3.1 million in direct property damage and seven civilian injuries.
- Fire Extinguishers are currently only mandated by DOT on vehicles over 10,000 pounds.

CHRISTIAN'S FIRE SAFETY FYI - #2
Portable Fire Extinguishers are the first line of defense against small fires. When used immediately during the early stages of a fire, lives and property are more likely to be saved. The following are some important NFPA statistics referencing these Life-Safety devices:
- 94% of the time, when a Portable Fire Extinguisher is used, it puts out the fire, typically within two minutes.
- Loss of life is minimal. 93% of all fire-related deaths occur once the fire has progressed beyond the early stages.
- Direct property damage is minimal. 95% of all direct property damage occurs once the fire has progressed beyond the early stages.

CHRISTIAN'S FIRE SAFETY FYI - #1
Some people are under the impression that if their Fire Extinguisher Gauge is in the green area, then a Fire Extinguisher Inspection is not necessary. THAT IS INCORRECT! Your Fire Extinguisher Gauge may not be gauging properly. Without a yearly Fire Extinguisher Inspection you are taking a big risk that it is indeed working properly, and it will be too late to find out when you might need it! In fact, by law, every fire extinguisher needs to be inspected each year and many insurance policies will not cover fires without a yearly inspection of your fire extinguishers. A yearly inspection of your Fire Extinguishers greatly raises your safety factor if a fire should occur. |
FIRE EXTINGUISHER DESCRIPTIONS
The following charts are to help you determine which Fire Extinguisher you may need. Knowing which Fire Extinguisher is the proper one to use is vital to controlling a fire. Using an improper Fire Extinguisher can actually help a fire spread. If you would like more information about Fire Extinguishers, please contact Hanes Supply 888-426-3755 or e-mail us by clicking here.
