Hanes Supply and Engineered Lifting Techologies Work Together on a Complicated Lift Plan

Hanes Supply, Inc and Engineered Lifting Technologies received a request from a customer to work with them on a complicated lift plan with an aggressive delivery schedule. The customer wanted to lift a 59’diameter rebar mat design weighing approximately 90,000 lbs each in a single pick. The three rebar mats made of # 8 and # 14 rebar (hand tied) were designed to plug 3 different 60’diameter shafts with a 1500CY concrete tremie pour at the bottom of a 120’ deep shaft filled with water.

The challenge was to design the proper pick points for such a large diameter rebar mat with a limited rigging height of 60’. Three designs were created before a design was chosen. The final design consisted of three lifting beams that had 20 pick points attached to the rebar mat.

We created 4-fixed pick points at the worst case scenario of where deflection was most likely to occur on the rebar mat with 2-2-leg wire rope slings. The other 16-pick points were 8-2-leg adjustable chain slings for leveling the rebar mat. There were two 30 ton x 40’ lower level lifting beams supporting the 8-2-leg adjustable chain slings. The top 60 ton x 30’ beam supported the 2-30 ton x 40’ beams with rigging along with the a 2-leg wire rope slings on each end of the 60 ton beam directly to the rebar mat. The entire rebar mat was leveled with 4” of tolerance for the concrete pour. All of the rigging was 55’ in height and 20,000 lbs of weight. The 550 ton hydraulic crane had a limited reach of 60’.

Once the rebar mat was set in place, four different tie-off points were installed outside the tunnel to suspend the rebar mat for the concrete tremie pour. There were four single leg wire rope sling attached to single leg adjustable chain slings used for the tie-off to the beam. The tolerance in adjusting the location of the rebar mat was within inches. There was 1500 cubic yards of concrete poured for the tremie pour.

Hanes Supply met the deadline with delivery, the lift and concrete pour has been a success on the first tunnel. In the future the other two tunnels will go through the same procedure. This design of the lift and concrete pour was unique approach to save in time and labor.
